Zac Brown Band
Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
April 15, 2012
Charging into California, Zac Brown Band marched into their third (of three) sold-out show when they rolled into the venue formerly known as Irvine Meadows.
Evidenced by completing the Cali trifecta and selling out shows at Cricket Wireless (Chula Vista), Shoreline and on this night in Irvine, the 2010 Grammy winner for Best New Artist that is known for his emotive performances and channeling of a dying breed of country musicians is onto something that has taken hold in a major way. Many credit Brown with restoring confidence in those who have become jaded by the increasingly commercialized Nashville machine.
The crowd inside the Amphitheatre was crackling by the time that Brown and Band took the stage, following a set by Nic Cowan, an artist who is signed to Brown’s label, Southern Ground.
Though night to night setlists do not deviate much due to a rather large stage setup and the need to keep production on schedule, the Irvine crowd was treated to a special electric offering of Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion,” a first for the band who usually places the number in the acoustic portion of their set. As explained by an unnamed crew member, the band “was unable to perform their usual acoustic set due to stage limitations (at the venue)” and therefore “had to make last minute changes” in order to work out a setlist.
With other highlights including a fantastic serving of “Free” that segued into “Into the Mystic,” the massive crowd danced the night away from the front row to the back of the lawn.
