Wicker Park Fest
August 1, 2010
In late 2007, Chicagoan Michael Berg had a vision. In 2010, it seems that the dream has become a reality. Boasting an all-star cast of players, Chicago based Van Ghost is taking the jam landscape by storm. They are doing so through thick yet subtle harmony between Berg and Jen Hartswick that is coupled with crisp definitive instrumentation that intermingles in a capacity that defies most musical tradition. They borrow from elements ranging from country western rockabilly to psychedelia all while maintaining lyrical integrity. The resulting phonic sensation that is produced is genre spanning, comfortable, and at times even chilling. Perhaps this is the primary reason why they are being met with warm reception at every stop along their way to a venue near you.
On what just so happened to be Jerry Garcia Day, through her images, fellow Chicago native, Julie Collins (rosemountainphoto.com) captured a recent hometown gig at Wicker Park Music Fest in a manner that manages to tell the unique story that Van Ghost is, well, telling.
