You absolutely know what you’re going to get with an album entitled, The Very Best of the Pogues – an hour’s worth of songs that can make anyone feel like they’re Irish and its St. Patrick’s Day. Comprised of songs from their 20-plus years together, this is The Pogues doing what they do best: singing songs designed to make you want a pint of beer, a shot of whiskey, and sing-alongs until they kick you out of the pub.
Starting with their classic “Dirty Old Town,” Shane MacGowan and band stick to what they do best. They have never felt the need to deviate from their formula of traditional Irish songs performed with the vim and vigor of the punks they once were, oh so many years ago. Songs like “Fairytale of New York” and “If I Should Fall From Grace With God” make this record worth picking up. Once named “One of The Top 50 Bands to See Before You Die,†The Pogues still deserve to be on that list.
The Very Best of the Pogues is out now on Shout! Factory.
