The Gabe Dixon Band has discovered the supple fruit that grows when adept songwriting, polished performances and crystalline production germinate, and the trio has harvested a bounty for its eponymous third album.
This marks a departure for the one-time jamband, and the band conjures a warm ‘70s vibe with endearing vocals and robust piano delivery by Dixon, blended with the feng shui rhythm section of bassist Winston Harrison and drummer Jano Rix. “Disappear” opens the album with an organic swell of ivory and drums, the signature sound that permeates all 12 compositions, particularly the pop-inflected “Far From Home” and the gorgeous, heart-wrenching “Further the Sky” featuring a paralyzing guest vocal performance by Mindy Smith.
An accomplished player who has shared the stage with Alison Krauss and Paul McCartney, Dixon proves that his and his band’s talents supersede supporting roles. The production occasionally shines away any raw emotion; however, it is clear that The Gabe Dixon Band has successfully reinvented itself.
The Gabe Dixon Band is out now on Fantasy Records.
