The Basement will release their US debut album, Illicit Hugs and Playground Thugs, on May 8, 2007 through Zealous Records.
The album was recorded over three weeks at Liverpool’s Motor Museum studio and was originally released in July 2006 by Deltasonic Records. Producing the album was fellow Irishman Mike Crossey (Artic Monkeys, Dead 60’s). The result is a stunning debut, that is merely the beginning for The Basement.
Like the Flying Burrito Brothers with hips, like Van Morrison letting loose with some backstreet white-boy soul shouting, The Basement embody the best from the past while thrusting it into the present. The spirit and intensity of Dylan’s late 60’s period with The Band is ever present in this remarkable debut from one of Europe’s most exciting new bands.
The Basement are John Mullin (vocals/ guitar), Mark McCausland (guitar/ vocals), Graeme Hassall (bass/ vocals) and Declan McManus (drums). They hail from Omagh, Northern Ireland where they first met at the age of 15. In 2000 the band moved over to Liverpool, escaping the small town claustrophobic pressures and in full pursuit of their musical dream.
The Basement will tour the US for the first time this summer.
