Trey Anastasio announces new solo album and TAB tour

trey bandPhish frontman Trey Anastasio has announced the release of his long awaited new album. PAPER WHEELS – the multi-talented singer/musician/composer’s first new solo album in three years – arrives October 30th via Rubber Jungle/ATO Records.
PAPER WHEELS will be offered as a deluxe limited edition that will include 180 gram 45 RPM 2x LP splatter vinyl and a die cut gatefold package with six unique sleeves. Only 4,000 of these special packages will be manufactured. A preorder is now available at Anastasio’s official web store,treyanastasio.shop.musictoday.com.
Produced by Anastasio and longtime collaborator Bryce Goggin, PAPER WHEELS was recorded last year at The Barn, the Phish founding guitarist’s Vermont farmhouse-turned-rehearsal space/recording studio. Anastasio and the members of Trey Anastasio Band (TAB) developed the material on stage while touring and at soundcheck on the tour leading up to the sessions, allowing them to track the album in just under a week. Taking a cue from the energetic immediacy of classic Stax Studio recording sessions, TAB worked fast and loose, playing together live in The Barn and wrapping up tracks after one or two takes. Written and co-written by Anastasio alongside frequent lyric partners Tom Marshall and Steve “The Dude of Life” Pollak, songs like the funk-driven “Bounce” and the elegiac “Invisible Knife” (written solely by Anastasio) are among the legendarily diverse artist’s most infectious and inventive, alive with creative vigor, robust musicianship, and true soul power (see the complete tracklisting below).
PAPER WHEELS features the classic TAB line up of drummer Russ Lawton, bassist Tony Markellis, and keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, augmented by a full horn section (including trombonist/vocalist Natalie Cressman, multi-instrumentalist James Casey, and longtime TAB trumpeter/vocalist Jennifer Hartswick). The album was mixed by 8x GRAMMY® Award-winning sound engineer Elliot Scheiner (Van Morrison, Steely Dan, Derek & The Dominos).
Anastasio’s 10th solo album and follow-up to 2012’s acclaimed TRAVELERPAPER WHEELS has been heralded in recent months by a series of new song premieres launched via his website featuring cover art shrouded in code, showcasing such tracks as “Bounce,” “Speak To Me,” and “Never.””Bounce” and “Never” were both originally featured on a limited edition 7″ single, released exclusively for Record Store Day 2015.
paperTrey Anastasio Band will celebrate the release of PAPER WHEELS with a headline tour set to embark October 16th and then continue through November 13th (see confirmed itinerary below). Russ Lawton: The Man Behind the Kit

Trey_Anastasio_The_Riv_02282011_20110227_IMG_8014Russ Lawton is known fondly as “the man behind the kit” for his time with The Trey Anastasio Band, Strangefolk, and extensive session work. While the Trey Band has some down time, Lawton has been focusing his attention on his latest project, the funk-duo Soul Monde with fellow Trey Band member, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski.

Lawton recently checked in with Honest Tune to discuss drumming, touring, and what the future holds for the hard-working drummer.

Honest Tune: When was the moment that you first knew you wanted be a drummer?

Russ Lawton: My first memory is being at the Portuguese Feast parade in New Bedford, MA with my parents where I grew up. You could hear the drummers coming down the street. It gave me chills and I didn’t understand what was going on, I was maybe nine-years old. Luckily there was a drum and bugle corp in my neighborhood that I joined soon after and then started saving for a drum kit.

unnamed-2HT: What drummers have you looked up to and idolized over the years?

RL: Steve Jordan; he has an amazing time, feel and tone that keeps the music fresh. John Bonham; again time and feel that swings. I go back and listen to him and he’s inspiring. Check out his isolated drum tracks on Youtube; you’ve got to hit the drums after that. And Tony Allen, Afro-Beat never gets old. His grooves are so inventive, slinky and heartfelt.

HT: Do you have a favorite drumming style to use?

RL: My favorite style is a cross between rock-funk and Afro beat. Kind of what you hear with Soule Monde and Trey Band.

Trey_Anastasio_The_Riv_02282011_20110227_IMG_7748HT: How did you connect with Trey Anastasio? What makes this project different from ones in the past?

RL: I meet Trey through Tony Markellis, the bass player in the Trey Band. When Trey was looking to put together the Trey Anastasio Band, he wanted Tony to be in the band. He asked Tony who he would like to play drums, Tony suggested me and thankfully it clicked. What makes this project different is that it was the first time I had worked with an established artist. I’ve been in original bands my whole life, slugging it out in the clubs so it is great to play at the theater level.

HT: How did you first meet Ray Paczkowski? How did Soule Monde come about?

RL: The first time I meet Ray was in 2001 when he joined the Trey Band. Soule Monde got together in Sugarbush, VT at a little club called Slide Brook. They have a house Hammond Organ, so I called Ray and asked if he wanted to play there. We came in with a few songs of his and some grooves of mine and made stuff up that turned into songs. Slide Brook kept asking us to come back to play every month and we started making home recordings and we saw the potential. It really has grown little by little. Ray’s great to collaborate with too.

HT: You call Vermont home. Are there any venues that hold special meaning to you in the Green Mountain State?

RL: There’s two. Nectar’s has special meaning because I’ve been playing there for a long time and its always felt like home. I just played at their 40th anniversary party. Years ago we would play four nights in a row, once a month. It really helped get your band tight. People came out to support you and it paid the rent too.

Higher Ground is a great club too, bringing in the next level of national acts. It would be less cutting edge around Burlington if the club was not around. Some of my early Trey shows were at the old and new Higher Ground.

HT: What does the future hold for Russ Lawton?

RL: I’m hoping the future will be as it is now; Trey Band, Soule Monde, releasing some of my vocal rock

songs, playing and recording with other musicians and always working to become a better drummer.

Trey Anastasio Thursday — Click here to enter to win CDs, shirts & autographs from Trey, Jen Hartswick & Van Ghost

Over the coming weeks, the giveaways will be grand and therefore, we figured that we should get things underway in a large fashion in hopes that you will embrace us, share what we are doing and if nothing else, enter to win some free shit… some of which will make you yearn with hope for a win, while one is just downright ridiculous, to the point that we should probably see a shrink before announcing the item(s) included.

It all began on Wednesday, with Warren Wednesday, through ________ Monday, 10/22/12 there will be a contest announced.

Each contest will recognize some of our most favorite guitarists. In most cases, names will coincide with days of the week. In one, it won’t, but the fact that we were celebrating guitarists overtook the desire to be cute… and any Honest Tune celebration of guitarists will always include the person whose name simply doesn’t fit with a day.

One word to the wise before beginning: READ EVERYTHING AND FOLLOW ALL CONTEST RULES in today’s contest, whether it be Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Monday.

Each contest will have its own set of requirements for entry, with some being only slightly different and one being entirely different. So please, for your sake, pay attention to everything you fill out and/or complete all steps in regards to what you are asked to do in order for your entry to be valid*.

*IMPORTANT: At last count, there were six Trey Anastasio “friend” pages and three “fan” pages on Facebook. Be sure that you are a fan of the page that is linked above. Further, being Jennifer Hartswick’s friend, in real life or on Facebook, is a beautiful thing. However, in this case it won’t amount to much. Please be sure that you are a “fan” of the page linked above. The same goes for Twitter, where there are several Trey pages as well.

4) This is probably the most important part of the entry process and definitely the most often incorrectly done art. In the past there have been times that we have been somewhat lax. However, in fairness to everyone, this will definitely not be one of those times because as you will see over the next five days, the stakes are too high for this series of contests for us to stray from the rules and regs.

Please carefully review the next two sections and complete one or both of them.

Trey Anastasio to release ‘Traveler’ and hit the road this fall

The last time that Trey Anastasio Band took the stage was at the 2011 installment of Bear Creek Music Festival in Live Oak, FL. When the band’s set wrapped, Trey announced that it would be quite awhile before they would be back out on the road. Though he probably was referring to the Classic TAB lineup (Jennifer Hartswick, Russ Lawton,Tony Markellis, Ray Paczkowski, Russell Remington & Natalie Cressman) that has been his most recent band of choice. it did leave some room for the audience to wonder.

When news began to surface of a new album, it became all but certain that there would in fact be a fall tour. Today, following an accidental leak by the folks at Ticketmaster, it is official: Trey Anastasio Band (in some form) will hit the road for a month’s worth of (primarily Northeastern) dates.

Here is the announcement from Trey.com:

“Traveler, Trey Anastasio’s forthcoming solo album, will be released on October 16 on Rubber Jungle Records / ATO Records. Trey co-produced the album with Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Jonsi) last fall in Katis’ Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT. Album pre-order details will be announced shortly. The first single on the album, “Scabbard,” will be released August 21.

Trey Anastasio Band will return to the road this fall to support Traveler. Tickets for all shows will be available through a real time presale beginning Thursday, August 16th at 10:00 am ET and ending Wednesday, August 22nd, at 5:00 pm ET at http://treytickets.rlc.net. For complete ticketing information or public on sale dates, please visit the tours page.”

A brief rundown of Trey Anastasio’s symphonic tour opening in Atlanta

Last night, Trey Anastasio kicked off what will be a short run of symphony dates, similar to those that have taken place in the past. In a surreal setting that included Atlanta Symphony Orchestra season ticket holders amongst the Phish crowd, it was a sight to behold; but moreover, a sound. The night included orchestral arrangements of such Phish classics as “Guyute,” “Divided Sky” and “Stash” as well as Anastasio numbers, “Let Me Lie” and “First Tube.” The centerpiece was Anastasio’s most recent musical masterpiece, “Time Turns Elastic.”

In what was a very special moment, one very gutsy gentleman stood up on his seat during “If I Could” to propose to his love and was given a standing ovation when she said “yes” and subsequent dedication of “You Enjoy Myself” from Anastasio (video below). Congratulations Billy and Brooke!

Trey Anastasio to embark on Winter symphony tour

Trey will launch his first-ever orchestral tour on February 9, 2012, performing with the Atlanta Symphony at the Atlanta Symphony Hall. The Trey Anastasio Winter Symphony Tour will also include performances with the Pittsburgh Symphony (2/14), the Colorado Symphony (2/28) and the Los Angeles Philharmonic (3/10). The programs, conducted by Scott Dunn in all four cities, will feature orchestrations of classic Phish songs and solo Anastasio compositions.

Tickets will be available through a real time presale beginning Thursday, December 1, at 10:00 am ET and ending Wednesday, December 7, at noon ET at http://treytickets.rlc.net. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Thursday, December 8, for Denver and Los Angeles, and Friday, December 9, for Atlanta and Pittsburgh. Visit www.trey.com for further details.

In 2009, Trey made his debut with the New York Philharmonic and Baltimore Symphony in programs that featured his concerto for electric guitar and orchestra, Time Turns Elastic, as well as original compositions.

The New York Times hailed his Carnegie Hall performance with the New York Philharmonic as “that rarest of rarities, a classical-rock hybrid that might please partisans from both constituencies. Set amid a generous group of popular Phish songs — gentle, string-cushioned ballads like “Brian and Robert” and “Let Me Lie,” as well as the audacious, intricate instrumentals “Guyute Orchestral” and “You Enjoy Myself” — the new piece [Time Turns Elastic] could hardly have gone wrong.”

TREY ANASTASIO WINTER SYMPHONY TOUR

2/9 – Atlanta Symphony Hall, Atlanta, GA with the Atlanta Symphony
2/14 – Heinz Hall, Pittsburgh, PA with the Pittsburgh Symphony
2/28 – Boettcher Concert Hall, Denver, CO with the Colorado Symphony
3/10 – Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles, CA with the Los Angeles Philharmonic

Trey Anastasio speaks at Drug Court Rally in D.C. (VIDEO)

1.jpgMany recall the disastrous toll that drugs once took on Phish front man Trey Anastasio. Quite frankly, his addiction to prescription painkillers nearly took it all from him. As he has described it, they took almost took his family, his freedom, his band and his life.

Then on December 15, 2006, Anastasio was stopped by law enforcement in Whitehall, NY and arrested for possession of various narcotics. In a totally un-Hollywood twist, Trey was treated with the same gloves that the average Joe Blow drug possessor is and was ordered into drug court and to perform standard community services.

In short, the arrest and subsequent court-ordered treatment saved his life. In 2009, Anastasio spoke before the National Association of Drug Court Professionals, (view that speech here) and gave a moving testimonial before a gathering of treatment professionals.

On Tuesday, in similar fashion, Trey showed up at a drug court rally in Washington, DC, to address a crowd and give a similar testimonial.

Trey’s instrumental Horseshoe Curve due in July

On July 24, composer, bandleader and guitarist Trey Anastasio will release his new album The Horseshoe Curve via his own Rubber Jungle Records on both CD as well as a limited pressing of Vinyl.  Instrumental from start to finish, The Horseshoe Curve showcases Trey's Afro-Cuban-influenced compositions, replete with five-part horn arrangements, tight breaks, multiple percussionists and Trey's signature guitar work.  The Horseshoe Curve is a journey, an inventive exploration of the big band funk that Trey has been steeped in for the larger part of the decade.

The Horseshoe Curve was recorded with producer Bryce Goggin at The Barn, as well as Trout Recording in Brooklyn, NY.  Alongside Anastasio, the band includes sax players Dave Grippo, Peter Apfelbaum and Russell Remington; trumpeter Jen Hartswick, trombonist Andy Moroz, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, drummer Russ Lawton, percussionist Cyro Baptista and bassist Tony Markellis.

As a bonus, Rubber Jungle Records will also release the Lucius Beebe EP, a five-song live CD available free to customers who pre-order the album from Anastasio's website.  The EP features live versions of three songs from The Horseshoe Curve and two songs from Seis De Mayo along with special guest appearances by Jon Fishman and John Medeski.

The album artwork features an illustration by Scott Lenhardt (who also did Seis De Mayo), a Vermont artist who recently spent time at the Barn as part of the Seven Below Arts Residency Program.  A Portion of the proceeds from The Horseshoe Curve will benefit the Seven Below Arts Initiative, the arts education non-profit that Trey founded last year.
