It was almost a cliche. Taking the stage on the very first night of their At The Beach festival in Mexico, the Avett Brothers kicked off their headlining set with “At The Beach.”

And, it was perfect. Continue reading At the Beach with the Avett Brothers

1st Annual Shaky Knees Music Fest line-up released

Atlanta will welcome a brand new music event, Shaky Knees Music Festival, to the Historic Fourth Ward Park and the Masquerade Music Park on May 4 and 5th. The two-day festival will feature 28 bands across three outdoor stages as well as local food trucks, artisans and vendors. Two-day general admission tickets as well as VIP passes go on sale on February 7 at Ticketmaster.

Shaky Knees

The lineup for Shaky Knees includes everything from up-and-comers The Orwells to “Best New Artist” Grammy nominees The Lumineers, with an eclectic lineup that includes Band of Horses, Jim James, Welsh rockers the Joy Formidable, Kurt Vile & the Violators and more. Curated by longtime Atlanta promoter Tim Sweetwood, the fest offers live music fans two days of music in an urban outdoor setting.

“I’m not trying to appeal to every music fan or break into territory that has already been well covered by other festivals,” Sweetwood says. “I’d love for people to be able to find enough of a connection in the lineup to be familiar with several of the artists. But I wanted to offer enough of a range musically that they could get turned on to an artist they might never have heard of but end up loving.”

Though the Masquerade Music Park has hosted concerts and festivals for years, including The Lumineers’ sold-out Atlanta show last fall; this will be the first major festival in the recently completed Historic Fourth Ward Park that runs adjacent to The Masquerade club.

“The Historic Fourth Ward Park Conservancy and Atlanta BeltLine did such an amazing job putting together the park and it’s brought so much more life to the area,” Sweetwood says. “We’re really excited and grateful to be able to have access to the park’s event lawn for our festival site.”

My Morning Jacket & Band of Horses, 8/24/12

My Morning Jacket & Band of Horses
Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park
Alpharetta, GA
August 24, 2012

As part of the Spontaneous Curation Series Tour, My Morning Jacket rolled into Alpharetta”s Encore Park with friends, Band of Horses, in tow. Having not toured the south since last year, their loyal legion was plenty prepped to catch a live show from the much heralded Louisville, KY quintet.

Over the past few years particularly, success has been no stranger for Morning Jacket, and it is well-deserved. Through a seemingly innate ability to service a sonically heavy tone with virtuous lyrics that are as introspectively written as they are universally appealing, what transpires is something that is all theirs. The best part is that it translates live, where any band of value earns its Wheaties.

Led by front man, Jim James, whose charisma and intensity intertwine with an intonation that one would never think the wookish looking lad could master, James creates an atmosphere where all can feel close to the musical hero, while the band provides the canvas for it to take place. It truly is beautiful and it all happened on this night in the suburban Atlanta city of Alpharetta, where in spite of a less-than sold-out house (likely due to Phish), the band once again managed to pull off something grand by proving once again that rock & roll is alive and well, fresh and good.

Shortly after completing their back to back tours in Japan and Australia, My Morning Jacket are taking their celebrated, exhilarating live show back on the road this August with the announcement of their North American tour, with Band Of Horses in support.

Since their sold out Madison Square show to end off 2011, they’ve played a triumphant performance at the Independent Spirit Awards in February and shared the stage with Preservation Hall Jazz Band commemorating their 50th Anniversary at Carnegie Hall. Jim James also completed a tour with New Multitudes (Jay Farrar, Will Johnson and Anders Parker) in promotion of their album honoring Woody Guthrie. Additionally, the band has been busy curating the Forecastle Festival for the festival’s 10th Anniversary, where they will conjointly be headlining the event along with Wilco and Bassnectar.

The band are showing no signs of slowing down in the months surrounding their tour. My Morning Jacket will be contributing to John Fogerty’s new album, Wrote a Song for Everyone, which will be released this fall. In the month of June, they will complete a European tour making stops in Spain, The Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Belgium and the United Kingdom. The band will also be headlining this year’s Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, Tennessee and Newport, Rhode Island’s Newport Folk Festival, as well as performing at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival next month.

Commencing their tour in Denver, Colorado at Red Rocks on August 3rd and 4th, My Morning Jacket will be recording both performances and offering them as complimentary downloads to all ticket holders for those shows. Both My Morning Jacket and Band Of Horses are enthusiastic of hitting the road for the month long tour. “YES! We’re touring with the incredible My Morning Jacket!” says lead singer Ben Bridwell. “So psyched to hit the road with our buddies and (hopefully) warm you all up for the greatest band going.”
