Stanley Clarke, one of the most innovative electric bass players of the past three decades – an artist and a creator in the truest sense of the words – will receive an honorary doctorate of fine arts degree from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA, on Friday, April 18, 2008. This honor will be added to Clarke’s already formidable list of accomplishments: gold and platinum records, GRAMMY Awards, Emmy Awards, wins from virtually every readers and critics poll in existence, and more. He was Rolling Stone’s very first Jazzman of the Year, and bassist winner of Playboy’s Music Award for ten straight years.
Meanwhile, The Toys of Men, Clarke’s latest release from Heads Up International/Roxboro Entertainment Group continues to climb the Billboard contemporary jazz chart. The 13-track CD examines the emotional sweep of war and features guest appearances by vocalist/bassist Esperanza Spalding and percussionist Paulinho da Costa.
