Santa Cruz Blues Festival
Aptos Village Park
Santa Cruz, CA
May 28 & 29, 2011
The 19th annual Santa Cruz Blues Fest took place over Memorial Day weekend May 28-29, 2011 in Aptos, CA. Sold out on Saturday, large crowds enjoyed the music both days.
A little rain on Saturday night did not thwart festival fans who were treated to the three hour Experience Hendrix show as well as New Orleans songstress Mia Borders, local favorite Jackie Greene and the exciting Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue. The big Hendrix tribute tour showcased Steve Vai, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Jonny Lang, Keb Mo, David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, Luther and Cody Dickinson, Ernie Isley, Living Colour, Brad Whitford, Malo Nanji, and Billy Cox, who actually played with Jimi Hendrix on Band of Gypsys.
Beautiful weather on Sunday saw blues favorites Chris Cain, Tommy Castro and Dave Alvin, along with the mighty Tower of Power and headliner Boz Skaggs closing out the day. We can only guess how the 20th Santa Cruz Blues Fest next year could top this one!
