Robert Randolph & the Family Band
New York City, NY
May 18, 2011
It has become a common saying around here but it is true…special things do happen in New York. Take for example, a recent Wednesday night at the Brooklyn Bowl where Robert Randolph & the Family Band’s gig was billed as "an evening with special guests" as part of a three night stand.
The confirmed guests were Of A Revolution’s (O.A.R) Marc Roberge (guitar) and Benj Gershman (bass) and the bulk of the pre-show buzz centered in when the two would join the stage and for what song. Little did the audience know that Randolph had an ace up his sleeve in the form of former Family Band members John Ginty and Jason Crosby (keys) as well as Joey Williams of Blind Boys of Alabama who also has a Family Band history of his own.
On a night that included stellar covers (including "When the Levee Breaks," Jacko’s "Billie Jean" and a loosely covered version of Blind Willie Johnson’s "If I Had My Way") as well as scattered Randolph sacred steel originals, Vernon Webb was there to capture the happenings for Honest Tune.
