Hailed by many as a founding voice in the jazz-fusion movement of the 1970s, Return to Forever is back on the road with Dweezil Zappa’s Grammy Award winning effort to keep the music of his dad, Frank, alive (Zappa Plays Zappa) serving as openers.
In a recent review from this tour, the Boston Globe raved that RTF "Took an enthusiastic audience back to a time when dazzling musicianship could still land an instrumental group on the pop charts. The band’s rocking encore, showed why [Stanley Clarke] ranked with Jaco Pastorius as a god of the electric bass. [Chick] Corea, meanwhile, demonstrated why Clarke calls him maestro.”
Billed as Return to Forever IV, the core of the band is Chick Corea‘s keyboards, Stanley Clarke‘s bass and Lenny White‘s drums, along with bandleader legend and Mahavishnu Orchestra alum Jean-Luc Ponty on violin and fiery-fingered guitarist Frank Gambale.
However, this coming Thursday (9/8/11), the already splendid RTF lineup will be sweetened even further by guest guitarist Jimmy Herring (Widespread Panic, Aquarium Rescue Unit, Jazz is Dead), who will join the band when the tour stops at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. Though all that is known is that Herring will sit in on a couple of numbers, it is probably safe to speculate that he will stay out for a hot minute due to Herring’s love of jazz-fusion, the fact that RTF’s numbers are seemingly endless improvisational masterpieces and the special relationship with Lenny White.
The coolest part — as iff all of the above isn’t cool enough — is that the Fox is offering Honest Tune readers the chance to get into this amazing event for 50% off the standard ticket price. So tell your friends and tell them to tell theirs. This is an incredible offer that we hope many take advantage of.
