Former Mavericks vocalist Raul Malo follows his acclaimed solo projects You’re Only Lonely and After Hours with a bracing set of original compositions on his Fantasy Records debut, Lucky One.
Elevating the bar with the opening title track, Malo’s vocal idiosyncrasies mirror another famous troubadour, Roy Orbison. As he translates the lovelorn tale of "Something Tells Me," the dividing line between Malo’s and Orbison’s pioneering artistry washes away altogether.
Malo’s expert guitar shredding slashes through "Hello Again" with help from backing band members Jay Weaver on bass and John McTigue on drums. Ben Graves provides multi instrumental support on the torch bearing "Ready For My Lovin’," "Moonlight Kiss," and "You Always Win." Mavericks’ aficionados will appreciate the powerfully passionate Malo/Al Anderson penned classic, "Crying For You."
Produced by Malo and master studio wiz/Los Lobos alumnus Steve Berlin, Lucky One continues Raul Malo’s winning streak of expertly crafted, high quality song craft combined with his original, otherworldly delivery. This one’s a keeper.
Lucky One is out now on Fantasy Records.
