Alex B first staked his claim as a cutting edge musician with the Pnuma Trio, and later released the uneven solo effort, Moments. But a new moniker, Paper Diamond, bodes well for the bassist and composer, and he successfully dives further into electronica on Levitate with the gently plodding sparkle of “Snowfall,” the synthed-out “All Green Lights,” and the thump-and-skitter of “Steady Swinging.” True to the electronica blueprint, Alex B revels in texture; he digs deeper and deeper with each bar, occasionally at the expense of momentum, leaving “Imagine the Possibilities” reeling beneath the weight of bass bombs and slithering blips.
Paper Diamond marks the most balanced work from Alex B; it is another step in a career that becomes more focused with each release. Despite being only eight succinct songs in length, Levitate – one of the first releases from Derek Vincent Smith’s Pretty Lights Music – marks a new high for this young and emerging musician.
Levitate is out now on Pretty Lights Music.
