ATHFEST 2008 will be held June 18-22, 2008, in historic downtown Athens, GA, a town long renowned for its thriving music scene. For the past eleven years, this annual music and arts festival has showcased the best in local, regional, and nationally recognized Athens-based talent. The festival also includes a juried artisan market, the Flagpole Music Awards show, KidsFest, film events, and much more. From 2005-2007, ATHFEST was included in the “TOP 20 Events for June” by the Southeast Tourism Society.
Over 175 bands and artists will perform over the course of the weekend. The two outdoor stages are free of charge. The headlining bands include: DARK MEAT on Friday, June 20th, MODERN SKIRTS on Saturday, June 21st, and DUBCONSCIOUS on Sunday, June 22nd. Additional performances on the outdoor stages include: Five-Eight, Bill Mallonee, David Barbe, William Tonks, Brantley Gilbert, Down With the Woo, Kebert Xela, Lefty Williams Band, Solstice Sisters, Ponderosa, Alathea, The Healers, Eucalyptus, Blue Flashing Light, and many more!
The festival’s “Club Crawl” features anywhere from two to five bands or artists performing nightly at a variety of participating venues, including: 40 Watt Club, Blur, Caledonia Lounge, Cine, DARC Recording Studio, Farm 225, Flicker Lounge, Georgia Theatre, The Globe, Go Bar, The Library, Little Kings Shuffle Club, Melting Point, Morton Theatre, Nuci’s Space, Rye Bar, Tasty World, and Wild Wings Cafe. Performing artists include: Elf Power, Bloodkin, Lona, Lullwater, Ken Will Morton, Twin Tigers, Centro-matic, Venice is Sinking, Hayride, Producto, Casper & The Cookies, We Vs. The Shark, Snowden, Don Chambers + Goat, Hope For Agoldensummer, Bearfoot Hookers, and more. Wristbands are $15 and can be purchased either online or during the festival at the main stage area. Wristbands provide discounts, free entry to special events, and allow unlimited access to the venues.
KidsFest will be located between Lumpkin and Hull Streets on Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Pam Blanchard and the Sunny-Side Up Band will kick off the entertainment on Saturday, June 21 at 10:30 AM. Other performances include: Gabriela Mejias, Chris the Bucketman, Breakdance and Hip-Hop Workshops from Dancefx, Stan’s Almost Famous Karaoke, and many more. Daily activities include: good dirty pottery, Sam’s Path Petting Zoo, Climbing Wall, Spidey Jump, Moon Walk, carnival games and prizes, and more! Small fees may occur.
Sprockets Music and Video Competition, presented by Film::Athens, will take place at the 40 Watt Club on Saturday, June 14 at 10:00 PM. The competition will feature music videos from local filmmakers and bands. Tickets are$5 at the door ($4 with an AthFest wristband).
The Flagpole Music Awards will be held on Thursday, June 19th at the historic Morton Theatre. The awards will begin at 8:00 PM and will include live musical performances from nominated talent, along with the announcement for “Best Music Video” and “Audience Choice” awards from the Sprockets Music and Video Competition.
TeenScreen FilmFest and Concert will take place on Friday, June 20th at Redeemer Presbyterian Church Auditorium at 8:30 PM on Pulaski St. TeenScreen features a lineup of various short films, documentaries, and music videos created by local teen artists. Admission is free with an AthFest wristband, $5 without a wristband, and $1 for students. Encore screenings will be held at Ciné on Saturday, June 26th at 5:00 PM.
AthFest Packaged Travel Deals are available and provide special rates for lodging at four locations near the festival. Hotels include: Courtyard by Marriott, Foundry Park Inn & Spa, Georgia Gameday Center, and Holiday Inn Express. In addition, the packaged deals include two of each of the following: AthFest wristbands, AthFest 2008 compilation CDs, T-shirt vouchers, music heritage tour tickets, and one downtown gift certificate.
A limited number of VIP Packages are available for the weekend. Single packages are $80.00 and double packages are $150.00. Packages include: VIP laminates, which allows the wearer unlimited access to all participating venues and the reserved VIP area of the beer garden, an AthFest 2008 compilation CD, and AthFest souvenir T-shirts.
