My Morning Jacket & Band of Horses, 8/24/12
My Morning Jacket & Band of Horses
Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park
August 24, 2012
As part of the Spontaneous Curation Series Tour, My Morning Jacket rolled into Alpharetta”s Encore Park with friends, Band of Horses, in tow. Having not toured the south since last year, their loyal legion was plenty prepped to catch a live show from the much heralded Louisville, KY quintet.
Over the past few years particularly, success has been no stranger for Morning Jacket, and it is well-deserved. Through a seemingly innate ability to service a sonically heavy tone with virtuous lyrics that are as introspectively written as they are universally appealing, what transpires is something that is all theirs. The best part is that it translates live, where any band of value earns its Wheaties.
Led by front man, Jim James, whose charisma and intensity intertwine with an intonation that one would never think the wookish looking lad could master, James creates an atmosphere where all can feel close to the musical hero, while the band provides the canvas for it to take place. It truly is beautiful and it all happened on this night in the suburban Atlanta city of Alpharetta, where in spite of a less-than sold-out house (likely due to Phish), the band once again managed to pull off something grand by proving once again that rock & roll is alive and well, fresh and good.
