Perhaps a fan in the crowd said it best when he said "what we have here, is a half a DSO," as Jeff Mattson, Rob Barraco, and Lisa Mackey of Dark Star Orchestra fame were joined by Joe Chirco on drums and Jason Crosby on keyboards and violin for a show billed as Mattson, Barraco, and Friends. However, the show was anything but a typical DSO set. Rather, it was an unrehearsed freeform compilation of songs that the band seemed to simply just want to have fun playing.

Sullivan Hall, a 350 people capacity venue located in Greenwich Village in New York, NY, was nearly packed for this Sunday night show that was rescheduled from an earlier canceled show due to the December Blizzard of 2010. The crowd seemed stoked for the evening’s happenings, evidenced by ecstatic cheers and and dance throughout the entire night. Jeff Mattson laid down some serious riffs and Rob Barraco, typically on keyboards in his other bands was right at home on bass and gelled rather nicely with Joe Chirco on drums and the majestic ivory and violin play of Jason Crosby. At one point, Barraco made a joke about them not being rehearsed that served as interjections to Mattson’s unapologetic stance for not knowing the material that well. Though cheat sheets were heavily relied upon, this did not take away from what was mild improvisational magic in the making.
