Since Ratdog stopped touring, the band’s lead guitarist, Mark Karan, has spent most of his time around his Northern California home. But make no mistake about it, he is not taking it easy. In fact, he is all over the place… in California.
Whether on the road with one of the multitude of folks with whom his 12 year tenure alongside Bob Weir brought him or simply playing a local gig, Mark’s guitar prowess has done anything but lie dormant. Those close to Mill Valley, CA — that is equidistant to both San Francisco and Sacramento and better still, eight miles from the scene’s most recent hotspot, Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads — can perhaps testify to this fact better than anyone else.
Since August, Karan has held down the fort at the town’s noteworthy club, The Sweetwater, for a bi-weekly residency that has turned into quite the “don’t miss event.”
Since its inception, the list to join the guitarist has been studded and has included quite the variety of musical talents, ranging from former band mates such as Huey Lewis or Ratdog’s Robin Sylvester to Mike Finnigan of Bonnie Raitt fame or Primus drummer, Jay Lane. On this night, the trend continued when Karan was joined by omni-smiling organ doctor Melvin Seals, rotating house band member, John Hanes on drums and Bobby Vega, the multifaceted bassist with credits as diverse being the composer for the Sonic the Hedgehog video game and being the 16 year old bassist playing alongside Sly Stone.
As she tends to be, Susan Weiand was on the scene to give us a glimpse of the Mill Valley good time.
