Born without a right hand, Lefty Williams displays his enormous rock and soul gifts on the John Keane produced disc, Snake Oil.
Halfway through the recording, the listener is transported on "In the Valley" through Williams’ arresting vocal treatments and dense, buzzing slide guitar workouts. Powering Williams into Snake Oil’s hidden charms, his backup unit, consisting of Steve Saunders on drums, Ray Dombrowski on bass and master keyboard player Jimmy Landry, adds depth and firepower to "All Your Way" and "Hey Mama." And, Derek Trucks Band bassist Todd Smallie lifts up the blues inflected "Why Didn’t You Call," while veteran star player Tinsley Ellis beefs up the edgy, driven "On the Prowl."
But, this is the Lefty Williams experience, and Keane makes sure to put his barreling vocals and razor sharp leads at the front of the sound mix. An inspired sophomore effort, Lefty Williams Band’s Snake Oil is destined to gain the blues-growling front man a new legion of admirers.
