Before there was "jam grass," "progressive bluegrass," or whatever boxed in name is given to the genre that typifies bands like Yonder Mountain String Band in this day and age, there was "Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass"a brand concocted by the founding members of Leftover Salmon to defy any such second or third party categorization.

To put it mildly, Leftover is legend in the world of YMSB and the like. None of this is mentioned to slight their successors, just as mentioning that the Grateful Dead paved the way for Widespread Panic would not be. It is simply a fact. Leftover Salmon are the forefathers of the sound.

When original banjoist Mark Vann succumbed to cancer, it was only a matter of time until Leftover announced a hiatus. Since then, they have partciipated in a series of one-offs at festivals throughout the country, but an "Evening with Leftover Salmon" has become all but unheard of.  That is until the "Winter Mountain Run 2011," a four date mini-tour that rolled through Fort Collins, Beaver Creek, Telluride and Aspen, CO, along with one date in Salt Lake City.

On this nightkeyboardist Bill McKay’s birthdayat Beaver Creek’s Vilar Performing Arts Center, Leftover rattled through everything from John Hartford’s "Steam Powered Aero Plane" to Bob Dylan’s "Tangled Up in Blue" to such classic originals as "This Is the Time," "Baby Hold On," and the encore and ever classic "Rise Up (Wake and Bake)."

One can only hope that this is a trend that will continue. Maybe next time they will make it out of the northwest. In the meantime, we have Zach Mahone to bring the images to us through his photography.
