John Lee Hooker : Anthology 50 Years

john_lee_hooker_anthology.jpgAnthology 50 Years is the first collection of material to span the entire career of legendary blues great John Lee Hooker.  His biggest hits, “Boom Boom,” “Dimples,” “Boogie Chillen’,” and “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,” are all included, along with guest performances from Charles Brown, Canned Heat, Albert Collins, Robert Cray, Van Morrison, Carlos Santana, and more.

While Hooker’s hits comprise the majority of the 32 tracks, Anthology 50 Years also exposes fans to some of his more obscure treasures, including the autobiographical “Teachin’ the Blues,” in which Hooker declares, “I was born with this beat.”  That beat, featuring his trademark open-G Spanish tuning, would eventually earn Hooker his nickname, “the world’s baddest boogieman.”

Playing the boogie or playing standard, slower blues, John Lee Hooker grabbed the attention of listeners across the globe, leaving audiences tapping their toes, shaking their bones, and begging for more.  Nearly eight years after his passing, and 60 years after the release of his first record, Anthology 50 Years proves Hooker’s charm to be as relevant and soul shaking as ever.

Anthology 50 Years is out now on Shout! Factory.
