Jeff Coffin Mu’tet
April 4, 2011
Despite a day filled with severe thunderstorms, power outages and the NCAA National Championship a friendly crowd gathered at Nashville’s Exit In. The band, The Mu’tet consists of some serious heavyweights. Band leader Jeff Coffin is a devoted music educator, band leader, member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and the Dave Matthews Band and pretty much the nicest bad ass around Nashville. He and fellow band member Jeff Sipe have recently released a duo album. Sipe too has a laundry list of accomplishments in the musical realm. He was the drummer for Aquarium Rescue Unit, Leftover Salmon, Keller Williams with Moseley Droll and Sipe and a key player in the famed Zambiland Jams. These two truly are geniuses in their respective fields, and create such intriguing music together. However that really just touches the needle to the record. The long play also includes Felix Pastorius on bass and a new cast of characters on tour including Bill Fanning on trumpet, Mike Sears on guitar and Chris Walters on keys.
They played close to two hours of musical acrobatics, however at no point did the super group ever over play. The music was tasteful and supremely talented.
