After nearly four years, Howe Gelb and Giant Sand return to form on the alt country gem, proVISIONS. Gelb has often been referred to as the Godfather of country roots rock, but proVISIONS extends far beyond the pioneer’s ‘70s and ’80s beginnings.
Embracing low-fi engineering methods, Gelb recorded the set in Denmark, drawing close parallels to poet musician Leonard Cohen. Assisted by the Danish backup players Thoger T. Lund on bass, Peter Dombernowsky on drums, and Anders Pedersen’s fluid guitar lines, Gelb’s indie production standards with Kent Olsen work up string arrangements to dramatic effect on "Out There" and "The Desperate Kingdom of Love."
Giant Sand’s influential reputation gathers together willing assisting participants, and Neko Case adds buoyant bounce to "Without a Word" while Isobel Campbell strengthens "Stranded Pearl," to soaring beyond mere descriptive word performance associated art. But, proVISIONS is Howe Gelb/ Giant Sand’s show, thus movements as complex as "Spiral" with Henriette Sennenvaldt and "Increment of Love" push this disc’s appeal to a worldwide level, gently roping in a new generation of followers to the modern music genius’ dark musings.
proVISIONS is out now on Yep Roc.
