There is something very refreshing about the North Mississippi Allstars. In a festival and jam scene that is becoming increasingly dominated by flatulent noises, NMAS incorporates elements in music that many still hold near and dear: organic instrumentation, deep southern roots, blues and improvisation.
With guitarist and vocalist Luther Dickinson’s primary projects – The Black Crowes and North Mississippi Allstars – disbanding/on hiatus, the recent appearances as a North Mississippi duo far more than as a trio and a new record (Keys to the Kingdom), we were pleased to sit down with Luther for a conversation at Wakarusa about these things and others. What we ended up getting was one of the more broad and expansive “on the record” exchanges to date. It came complete with childhood stories, sibling relationships, psychedelic indulgence with The Crowes… and our dear and lovely Honest Tune friend Grace Potter interrupting it all.
