With their unique brand of lasting-slapdash-R&B in tow, G.Love & Special Sauce were greeted by a packed house when they rolled into Charlottesville’s beautiful Jefferson Theater on a recent Sunday night. In support of their most recent album, Fixin’ to Die, the trio was as tight as a tick throughout the entire evening.

Fixin’ to Die is G.Love’s 15th studio release and with many fan preferences in his catalogue, the man whose birth certificate reads Garrett Dutton was presented, as he always is, with a welcomed challenge to represent his new work while still feeding the packed theater a taste of the tunes that have graced their tape, CD and iPod collections for many moons.

After hitting high points from the past like “My Baby’s Got Sauce,” “Shooting Hoops” and “I-76” along with the title track from Fixin’ to Die, the company charged though interesting covers of Paul Simon’s “Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover” and the Beatles’ “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?”.

Following the trip down The White Album lane, G.Love came out armed with an acoustic guitar, took a seat, and just as a busker would, solicited the Jefferson legion by simply asking “well, what do you want to hear?”

After taking several requests, his Special Sauce cohorts returned to the stage with friends — from the opening act Apache Relay – trailing behind. After a couple of songs with both bands together, G.Love asked for more requests before ending the the night with his seminal  hit, “Cold Beverage,” from 1994’s self-titled debut.

The band is playing spectacularly right now, and simply witnessing bassist Timo Shanko work his magic is worth the price of admission in and of itself. With dates booked through the end of the year, this outfit that rarely takes time off, remains as fresh and appear to be as happy to just play music as they did nearly twenty years ago.
