Dave Douglas knows a few things about big band jazz. The trumpet player has organized a skillful group of musicians to mine the music genre’s past and stake a new place for their future on the eloquent project, Spirit Moves.
Starting with Rufus Wainwright’s "This Love Affair," Douglas introduces the contributions of Brass Ecstasy, including Luis Bonilla on trombone, Vincent Cnancey on french horn and Marcus Rojas on tuba. Gliding through "The View from Blue Mountain," the ensemble gels together to deliver a knockout punch reminiscent of the best of Branford and Wynton Marsalis. "Twilight of the Dogs" is a gripping workout of tension and release, and drummer Nasheet Watts executes the staggered time signatures with fluid ease.
Produced by Douglas, Spirit Moves should introduce a new generation to jazz’s rich history and startling songwriting complexity.
Spirit Moves is out now on Greenleaf Music.
