Dark Star Orchestra
February 5, 2011
Dark Star Orchestra rolled their way into Charlotte’s sold-out Neighborhood Theater prepared to unleash a show from one of the most splendid runs in the Grateful Dead catalog.
Over the course of three days, 9/9/74-9/11/74, the Dead took up residence at Alexandra Palace in London, England. A selection of songs from the three day run would later be released as Dick’s Picks Vol. 7.
DSO performed the meat of the three day sandwich, 9/10/74 for the Metrolina crowd. Never straying away from anything that their mentors did, the band was a drummer short just as the Dead was during these years. Dino English, the band’s Bill Kreutzmann, held down the fort as his cohorts rattled through the set as close to format as only they can do.
Just as any listen to the original 9/10/74 will reveal, highlights were a first set closing "WRS Prelude">"WRS Part 1">"Let It Grow" and a spine tingling second set "Dark Star">"Morning Dew." Unsurprisingly, these same runs of gems were also highlights from DSO on this night in Charlotte.
