New Jersey resident Charlie Hunter strikes out into new musical territory on the soulful Gentlemen, I Neglected to Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid.
With an appropriate title for tough economic times, Hunter’s recording also has a street savvy vibe and plenty of horn accompaniment from trombonists’ Alan Ferber and Curtis Fowlkes, along with trumpeter Eric Biondo on the opening number, "You Look Good in Orange." Hunter’s seamless mastery of the 7-string guitar holds the listener spellbound on the N’awlins flavored "Antoine" and the jazz nugget, "Drop a Dime."
The humor inherent on "High Pockets and a Fanny Pack" doesn’t end with the title, as Dap Kings and Deep Banana Blackout drummer Eric Kalb pounds through a high tempo rhythm that has insistent toe tapping consistency. The high point of Hunter’s work on Gentlemen, however, is the graceful and majestic instrumental, "High and Dry," a classic track that is destined to stand the test of time.
Taped at Brooklyn Recording in August 2009 and engineered and mixed by Dave McNair, Gentlemen, I Neglected to Inform You You Will Not Be Getting Paid has Charlie Hunter creating magic with his linear brand of improvisational fusion.
