Wanee 2012: Treasured photo memories & a chance for a keepsake

Seven years ago, an idea was born. The idea was to have Wanee Festival, music festival named after its location that would be deeply rooted in the southern jam and improvisational rock. It would be piloted by the only band who could front such an affair with much legitimacy, The Allman Brothers Band, who fit the geographic bill for “host band” perfectly as well.

Originally hailing from Jacksonville, FL, a mere hour and change drive from the festival site, the sacredly luscious grounds of the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park is only three hours the true Allman home, The Big House, located in Macon, GA.

In its inaugural year, the 2005 Wanee lineup boasted a grand total of 11 whole bands, a far cry from the 33 this year”s event brought.

Aside from the glaring differences since then (the implementation of electronica and other genres, much larger crowds, etc,), many things have remained the same, including: The Allman Brothers still headline two nights, Allman related (Derek Trucks, Warren Haynes & Oteil Burbridge) acts remain close to the top of the bill, the event is still deeply rooted in Southern rock/jam and Col. Bruce still isn”t on the bill.

Here at Honest Tune, we value tradition and last year, we offered a contest to win an autographed Derek Trucks photo or an autographed North Mississippi Allstars CD.

This year, we will do something similar, but first, let”s have a look at photos from Wanee, 2012.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1) Q: I heard that one of your staff photogs, Ian Rawn, was Brian Farmer”s nephew. Is there any truth to that?

A: Listen… if Ian Rawn was Brian Farmer”s nephew, he would post about it everyday on his . There would be absolutely no reason for you to have to ask that question. Ian has tried to keep this a secret, but screw it, we are outing him. The only reason that Ian goes to see any show that Warren is involved in is because of how Farmer tunes Warren”s guitars, sets his levels, etc. Ian will try and discredit what has been written here, but as you know… you should always believe everything you read.

2) Q: I don”t have a Facebook account. What can I do to still have a chance to enter?

A:  “O” to the “M” to the muthafunkin” “G.” It is you again, isn”t it? Same story, different day. Or is it a different story this time? Wait… let us guess. Oh, I got it! The last time you had a Facebook account, somebody hacked into it and sent your mom a bunch of crazy messages. The only problem with that story was that all of the messages were true and that “chocolate” that you ate was more than a Reese”s. Look dude, it wasn”t Facebook”s fault. Learn your lesson. Don”t take candy from strangers. Didn”t you learn that when you were like five years old? However, if you find yourself at an event where you feel that you “must” do so, just don”t get on the computer.

Once again, if you absolutely refuse to have a Facebook in your name, create a fake one. Just let us know in the special place in the entry form created especially for you. Or you could just not enter.

3) Q: I have a question that is not answered here. Why is it not answered and what do you plan to do about it?

A: Too bad.

Damn. How cool would it be to be able to really be mean like that? Probably not very cool, actually. But we will never know because we are really nice people here and we really love you a lot. So, if there is absolutely something that you must know, head up to the top of the page and click on the “contact” menu item and fill out the submission form. We will be with you shortly.

Good Luck!

Enter here to win a Martin Sexton tour shirt and autographed CD…

Last week, we released an article that included exclusive videos that were shot in Atlanta prior to Martin Sexton’s performance at the Variety Playhouse.

As part of our Live, Backstage and Unplugged series, Sexton sat down with Honest Tune’s David Shehi for a soulful serving of “There Go I” and subsequently moved to the front of the venue for a performance of “For What It’s Worth” and a brief interview.

There was no way that Shehi was going to walk away without some goodies to give away.

What you are playing for…

1) One GRAND PRIZE winner will walk away with a tour shirt from Martin Sexton’s spring 2012 tour and an autographed copy of his latest EP on CD, Fall Like Rain.

How to Enter…

1) Log in to your Facebook account (if you aren’t already).

Frequently Asked Questions:

1) Q: I am Martin Sexton’s biggest fan and I vote Rex. Shouldn’t I just be able to win without doing all of the stuff that everybody else has to do? Maybe you will just let me buy it.

A: Seriously? His “biggest fan?” You and how many more? I mean come on, the guy has been at this thing for quite awhile and surely there is some crazed person out there who sleeps with a guitar pick that Marty gave him/her back in the early 90s. Let’s just leave it at this… if you are that guy, you can have the CD, but please never come back to our site. If you aren’t, the answer is “no.” Here at Honest Tune, everyone is equal and we pride ourselves on the fairness of our contests. That is why we film the drawings. So please, can it with the groveling emails.

2) Q: I don’t have a Facebook account. What can I do to still have a chance to enter?

A: There is this book called DSM IV. Your local library will have it and so will your local psychiatrist. In it, there is a diagnosis of something to do with being antisocial. Listen up now, because what you are about to read will save you a bunch of money in therapy.

In a recent issue of Psychology Today (my psychiatrist gets it), there was an article by some big league therapy guy who said that he consistently recommends that his patients engage social media. He does this to help them “warm up to healthy levels of socialization.” So for the sake of your mental health, get an account.

See, that was worth 75 bucks in a counselor’s office at a minimum. With the money you saved, you should find a similar prize on eBay, buy it and give it to the person we addressed in FAQ 1. Just don’t include your real return address.

In all seriousness though, if you have a really bad case of the aforementioned disorder (or if you just don’t have a Facebook account because you are in one of those fields where it is not advisable to have one, you got overly upset over the whole “timeline” thing or are taking a stand against Zuck buying that site that makes everybody look like a pro photog,  etc. ), make a fake one and cancel it after the contest. Hell, you may even make some fake friends while you are at it. Just let us know you did so in the comment section of the entry form.

3) Q: I have a question that is not answered here. Why is it not answered and what do you plan to do about it?

A: Too bad.

Damn. How cool would it be to be able to really be mean like that?  If there is absolutely something that you must know, head up to the top of the page and click on the “contact” menu item and fill out the submission form. We will be with you shortly. Now let the elevator music commence.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1) Q: I am not 18 yet. What should I do?

A: Get your mom or older brother or sister to enter for you. Just be sure that your mom “likes” Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park on Facebook and that your older brother or sister is not a Yonder, Leftover, SCI, Emmitt Nershi, Keels or Greensky fan… or just an asshole who wouldn’t give you your poster if he won.

2) Q: I don’t have a Facebook account. What can I do to still have a chance to enter?

A: Create a Facebook page. Seriously, stop being so freaking paranoid. You probably only heard about this contest because your pal heard about it on Facebook. If you REALLY don’t want to have a Facebook account, it’s not like there aren’t tons of fake ones out there. Sorry to burst your bubbles guys, but that really smoking hot gal that added you really just wants you to join a dating site.

Anyway, so yeah… just make a Facebook account for your dog. But be sure that you let us know that you did that by commenting below. Otherwise we will not know that you followed the rules and all of you and your pooch’s efforts will be for naught.

3) Q: I have a question that is not answered here. Why is it not answered and what do you plan to do about it?

Feelin’ Lucky? Enter here to win a Trevor Hall tour shirt and signed copy of his new album

What kind of good sports would we be if we didn’t offer you, our dear Honest Tune family and friends, a chance to try out your luck on St. Patrick’s Day?

There is no need to answer that question because on this festive day, one lucky reader will walk away with a nice little bundle of merch from our pal, Trevor Hall. Yes, you read that correctly, keep reading and you will have the opportunity to enter to win a Trevor Hall tour shirt — in green, of course — and a signed copy of Trevor’s new CD, Everything Everytime Everywhere, commonly referred to as E3.

E3 is Trevor’s fifth studio release and third from his current label, VanGuard and  — just as the case has been since he released his first album in the 11th grade — with E3, he once again leads with his strongest suit… his scholarly aptitude as a songwriter.

Though there is no huge deviation from previous work, the record showcases a matured Hall in his finest form. Elementally diverse, the listening journey on E3 is broad; at times it is heavy and sriritual while at others it playful and toe tapping. Crisscrossing across dashed lines of reggae, rock and even hip hop, diversity makes for a record that can be played time and again without becoming stale.

Driven by the first single, “Brand New Day,” the album has been met with magnificent reception and radio play across the country. Most important though, fans both old and new have taken to the album as a duck does to water.

Trevor is currently touring in support of the album and hopefully he and his band haven’t passed your city by yet. If so, stay tuned and you will see what you missed with an Honest Tune review with photos from Birmingham (3/15/12) this coming week as well as a Live, Backstage and Unplugged segment that Trevor was gracious enough to sit down for on that same night in Birmingham.

It just doesn’t make sense. Trevor is a lover, not a fighter.

Triple Coverage with North Mississippi Allstars’ Luther Dickinson: Contest, Interview/Performance, Photos

There is not much more of an Honest Tune than the North Mississippi Allstars. Whether playing as a duo or trio, Luther Dickinson and crew bring the Delta with them to wherever they find themselves.

Through each of their chosen instruments, Luther Dickinson on guitar and vocals, Cody Dickinson on drums, washboard and occasional guitar and Chris Chew on bass and backing vocals, the members of this now veteran ensemble play in a manner that literally transports its listener to the muddy waters that the boys grew up swimming in and from which so many have drawn musical influence.

So much about Luther is a result of his upbringing; his reverence for the blues forefathers, his innate ability to make any crowd, no matter the size, feel like  family and his constant desire to evolve in his craft.  He credits much of this to his father, Jim, who sadly passed on in 2009, a wound that at times, still seems quite fresh.

In his efforts to not grow stagnant, within the first half of this year alone, Dickinson will release two albums; a solo acoustic instrumental album, Hambone’s Meditations,  and an album with an entirely new project, The Wandering, featuring an eclectic cast of some of the greatest female talent — that many have never heard of –  in the south: Shannon McNally, Amy LaVere, Valerie June, and Sharde Thomas.

While on the scene at Chattanooga’s Track 29, Honest Tune’s David Shehi had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with Luther. Over the course of the chilly day, they chatted about the Allstars, The Wandering, the solo stuff, vinyl collections and much more, walked around the Chattanooga Choo Choo Park to check out the trains and decided to stop at one so that Luther could debut a track from teh forthcoming solo album and played another  (as part of the Live Backstage & Unplugged series).

Furthermore, before they called it a wrap, shook hands and gave manly hugs all around, Luther also handed him a couple of nice little keepsakes to bring back for the Honest Tune readership.

So without further adieu, sit back as Honest Tune presents Triple Coverage with Luther Dickinson.

A: Create a Facebook or Twitter account under your dog’s name, find our Facebook page or Twitter account, “like” us or “follow” us, and delete your account when the contest is over. If you do not want to do any of that… well, I guess this isn’t the contest for you. Hang out though, not all contests have to do with fattening Zuckerberg’s wallet.

Enter here for a chance to win Bluegrass Ball in Indy & St. Louis tickets…

Two things that we absolutely love here at Honest Tune truth in music and contests! So, we have decided to combine our love of the two by bringing an opportunity for you to catch some of the finest  bluegrass pickin’ — courtesy of The Travelin’ McCourys, Bill Nershi (String Cheese Incident, Emmitt-Nershi), and Jeff Austin (Yonder Mountain string Band);

The events will bookend Chicago’s Bluegrass and Blues Festival and many fans are taking the opportunity to take in all three events. Well, we are pleased to present you, yes you, the opportunity to do so at the grand total of zero dollars (sans travel and other associated costs)

Over the past year, we have found ourselves in some unique positions with these artists, gathering exclusive footage for the ages (see below). So consider this a celebration of sorts… a celebration in the joy of giving.

But first, let’s have a look at who will be playing. (Bios courtesy of the artists)

The Artists

The Travelin’ McCourys

The Travelin’ McCourys do not stand still. They are on the road–and online–entertaining audiences with live shows that include some of the best musicians and singers from all genres. It’s always different, always exciting, and always great music. No other band today has the same credentials for playing traditional and progressive music. As the sons of bluegrass legend Del McCoury, Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Rob McCoury on banjo continue their father’s work-a lifelong dedication to the power of bluegrass music to bring joy into people’s lives. And with fiddler Jason Carter and bassist Alan Bartram, the ensemble is loved and respected by the bluegrass faithful. But the band is now combining their sound with others to make something fresh and rejuvenated.

Jeff Austin

Jeff Austin is best known for his many years playing mandolin for Colorado heavy hitters, Yonder Mountain String Band. Yonder has always played by their own set of rules bending bluegrass, rock and roll, and countless other influences. While most known for his playing with Yonder Mountain String Band, Jeff has played with countless musicians and is sought after by countless musicians and festivals alike.

Billy Nershi

From the saloons of Telluride to the some of the most sought after venues in America, Bill Nershi has delighted countless fans as a guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and founding member of the String Cheese Incident. A seasoned veteran of flat-picking and a variety of acoustic styles, Nershi adds a unique, colorful perspective to virtually any musical situation he encounters, and his enthusiasm and playful spirit encourage an interactive, participatory experience for musicians and fans alike. His most recent forays into dobro, bass, and lap steel playing, as well as his accomplished songwriting contributions with Honkytonk Homeslice & the Emmitt-Nershi Band, prove that his musical horizons will only continue to expand.

Happy Holidays from PGroove — a card and a contest

It is an exciting time for our friends in Perpetual Groove. After welcoming back original keyboardist Matt McDonald in Athens last month, PGroove is setting the stage for what many fans (or perps) are referring to as “revisiting PGroove 1.0 with a 3.0 attitude.”

McDonald will be on hand for the band’s NYE event in Atlanta as well as when PGroove sets sail aboard Jam Cruise’s 10th sailing.

In November, Honest Tune‘s David Shehi got Matt and bassist Adam Perry on the phone to discuss the recent news. You can hear that conversation here.

Today, we got this card from the guys and after laughing heartily, we decided that it definitely needed to experience life outside of our inbox. To boot, the contest to win free tickets to Perpetual Groove’s NYE blowout at Atlanta’s Center Stage is still underway.

Without any further ado, we present a wish from the Perpetual Groove family to yours… enjoy!

Rex-A-Vision & Honest Tune present: A Cornmeal Holiday Special (Video, & Massive Contest)

Here at Honest Tune, we know a little something about mixed reviews. Throughout a given year, we publish concert reviews, album reviews, festival reviews and photo galleries from contributors across these amber waves of grain. Naturally, the majority are positive, some are negative and in rare cases, some are downright nasty. Such is the case with the holiday season.

There are those that cannot wait until all of the turkey is eaten so that they can go fight with all walks who show up at their local Best Buy, Target or Sears to save some dough. There are others who would rather spend the day playing Clark Griswold by trying to illuminate their entire street with multi-colored gaudy goodness. Then there are those who shop online out of obligation, may put up a tree or Menorah for the kids’ sake and simply cannot wait until things return to normal — when Wal-Mart is once again a ghost town at three in the morning and there isn’t a Grinch cop on every corner who simply cannot wait to give you that ticket on your morning commute. Then there are the real bah-humbug types.

Well, you are all in luck. What we have here is something for all types. Whether you are a lover or a hater of the holiday season, our friends in Cornmeal feel your pain and joy. In other words, this Cornmeal Holiday Special is for you. And even if it is not, the free stuff that we are giving away definitely is.

So sit back, relax, watch and listen as Rex-A-Vision and Honest Tune present A Cornmeal Holiday Special… and don’t forget to peruse the contests that may help you get off cheap this year or give you a keepsake or experience all for you.

Contest: Enter Here for a chance to win free albums from Greensky Bluegrass

It has been quite the year for our friends in Greensky Bluegrass, the quintet from Kalamazoo, MI. Beginning with Jam Cruise 9, Greensky has done nothing but show sustained growth as they have toured extensively, hitting numerous major music festivals along the way. Success hasn’t come easy for the  guys who have been at it for over a decade, but with the release of their latest studio offering, Handguns, it seems that the ensemble has finally pushed through to the well-deserved “other side.”

In reference to Handguns, Honest Tune‘s Jeff Green wrote that  it proved “the band’s ability to flow seamlessly as a single unit, and incorporate a variety of elements from different musical forms.” It truly is an instant bluegrass classic with songs ranging from humorous to downright introspective. Further, it effectively accomplishes the difficult task of being a band that relishes in the road and being able to successfully lay down heavily road tested material and have it translate with seamless perfection to disc.

Back in September, Honest Tune‘s David Shehi and Rex Thomson spoke to the guys in what turned into one of the most hilarious interviews we have ever published, and showed just how natural the band is and how their organic nature does not stop with music, but carries through into their relationships amongst each other. (Below: Watch the video interview, Listen to two streaming tracks from Handguns and Read the fine print)

To celebrate the success of Handguns that debuted at number 3 on Billboard’s Bluegrass Chart, we would like to invite you, yes YOU, to enter for your chance to win a copy of your very own along with a copy of 2010’s double-disc live album, All Access Vol. 2.
