A little bit about the fest…

The Inaugural Charm City Folk & Bluegrass Festival is being presented by the Baltimore Management Agencyand Union Craft Brewery, and will be held on the grounds of the Union Craft Brewery in the historic Woodberry neighborhood of Baltimore on April 27. Seriously is there a better combination than fine local craft brew and bluegrass?

Baltimore has a long, rich history in bluegrass stretching back to the 1950s and 60s when the city was, in the words of bluegrass legend Del McCoury, “the hot-town for bluegrass music.”  The Charm City Folk & Bluegrass Festival will keep that rich tradition alive.  It will be headlined by multi-instrumentalist Tim O’Brien and banjo legend Tony Trischka, as well as featuring a number of artists who will be familiar to Honest Tune readers.  Baltimore’s own Cris Jacobs, who made a name for himself as the singer and guitarist of The Bridge, will debut his new bluegrass band, Cris Jacobs and The Union Men, which will feature banjo master Mike Munford.  Also appearing will be the renegade cowboy-poetry of Caleb Stine, the sweet harmonies of The Honey Dewdrops, and the fine picking of Feinwood.

The outdoor festival will feature local food and craft vendors, and Union Craft Brewing’s award-winning beer. Tickets are on sale now at www.eventbrite.com/event/4876444577

A belated Mikey Monday: A raffle for Live Oak…

In the world of live music, there are certain places that are held near and dear, sacred not for one particular reason, but rather for a host so large that trying to pin it down, or even explain it, would be a less than fruitful effort.

In similar fashion, any fan can point to a particular band, artist or player of a particular instrument as the one that does “it” for them. It, in its intended sense, is as unexplainable as Stonehenge. It is that tone that cannot be taught. It is that soul that cannot stay tucked away. It is whatever it is that gives it the ability to snatch one by his shirt and take full ownership of everything from the next move he will make to the feelings he will have while getting there.

During his short time with us, Michael Houser was the source of the aforementioned for literally countless fans. Behind an unassuming demeanor, and from a seated position, the power he unleashed was staggering. There was something about his tone that even if blindfolded, it was unmistakeable. No one since has even attempted to recreate it; they know they would fail if they tried. It was, is and always be his honest tune. Fortunately, he shared it with us and therefore, it rings with immortality, meaning that it can never depart.

Much was written in regards to how Mikey continues to shine a light of influence on us when Ian Rawn, Steve Love and Jamie Wickford published what we think was a beautiful piece recounting the We Miss You Mikey occasion. Whether watching online or from within the venue itself, we thought that it captured the feeling that the night in the Georgia Theatre spawned. In a word, that feeling was “inspired.”It was from that night that this idea being presented today was born…

â—Š The Idea

The record pictured has been sitting around for quite a long time. It’s cover tells that story by itself. It has seen better days, but those days were before it spun on a record player literally more times than even its direct owner (which is always a source of fun dispute) knows. As you will see, it has been signed by the band that created the content contained on the vinyl therein, Widespread Panic, including Mikey Houser.

Needless to say, this is a treasured little item, but alas, the conclusion has been made that it should go and live elsewhere, perhaps… say, your house.

That conclusion was arrived at about a year ago, but when it was, the decision to wait for the right time and the right reason to let it go. That time, for whatever reason, is now.

â—Š The Cause

Referring back to the first sentence way up there ↑, this past summer, one of our staff’s and senior contributor’s favorite places to be is Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park. It is a “home field ” of sorts. It is a place that, for so many, has represented reuniting with old friends and never leaving without new ones.

Earlier this year, the area that is home to the park came under attack. Its wasn’t attacked by mortars of flame but rather by one of the very elements from which the location derives a portion of its identity, the molecule of life itself, water. It all happened when tropical Storm Debby descended on the small town of Live Oak, releasing an unprecedented amount of rain, wreaking havoc across Suwannee County. This was in June.

Next month, folks will flock to the town, occupying its hotels and those of close by Lake City, at least for the few very chilly wee morning hours that succeed the funk-filled late Bear Creek nights. For some, the havoc that our Mother wreaked on the grounds that have been a dance floor to so many will be out of mind. For others, thoughts of the devastation will be fleeting, resembling the Spanish moss that hangs overhead, blowing with each passing Florida breeze.

Neither of these statements are meant to come across as condescending. To suggest that people should walk around drearily thinking about a disaster while some incarnation of a “best of” lineup of musicians has sprung up for the 9th time during Bear Creek would be a bit dumb. After all, to the naked eye things appear to be just fine in Live Oak. Nearly seven months later, the roads have long since been opened and business is back to usual for a large portion of the townspeople. But, as we all know, there is always more to the story under the surface.

The fact remains that some families lost everything in June. Included in everything was their car(s), home, appliances, furniture, gardens, clothes, food, toiletry products, a combination thereof and far too much more to try and list. For these people, things are far from the way they were prior to the flood.

This is where we come in, but to suggest that we can solve all of Live Oak’s problems would be quite pompous and actually, quite naive. This said, we can definitely do something. How much will be up to you and those like you.

â—Š The Raffle

The Prize: Autographed LP- Bombs & Butterflies – Widespread Panic

Description:

The album is a limited edition LP (Vinyl) release of Widespread Panic’s Bombs and Butterflies (1997-Capricorn). It is numbered 2627 out of 3000. The album’s cover (that is the one that those common with the album recognize as the cover of the standard release CDs, cassettes, etc.) unfolds into a poster, as seen in one of the pictures below.

The outer cover is signed by all members of Widespread Panic that were in the lineup at the time that the album was released: John Bell, John “JoJo” Hermann, Michael Houser, Todd Nance, Domingo S. Ortiz and Dave Schools

There will be a second prize but that is still being ironed out. Trust us, it will be good and as worthy a consolation as it can be to the “once in a lifetime” status of the grand prize.

Here is the plan:

1) The autographed Widespread Panic album will be raffled for 5 bucks per ticket. There will be a second place prize (that will be announced soon… still working out the details there)

2) One family will be the beneficiary of all monies collected and that family will be chosen through cooperation with our friends at Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park.*

3) The money will be delivered during or before the Bear Creek festivities and only after a winner has been drawn from the raffle.

That’s it! Sounds simple, right? Not so fast! This requires YOUR help. Why? Well, other than the obvious reason that we need you to buy a ticket (or 20), if by November 2, 2012, there has not been at least $500.00 raised, all monies will be refunded and the raffle will not go down or be extended accordingly.

Why 500 clams?

The fact is, there is a near identical item that recently sold for 3,500.00 and another up for auction on eBay with a starting price of 2,750.00. So, if we wanted to, we could just hop on over to eBay, sell the album of a couple of thousand dollars, donate that money and be done with it.

But that requires absolutely zero community effort and excludes so many from the opportunity to have the album and the opportunity to give to a family that is in need.  Plus, we hope that we can do better that a couple of thousand dollars. We want to blow this family’s mind with the amount of generosity that the folks with our little Honest Tune family & community gathered.

So tell your friends, tweet, post this on Facebook, etc.  Let’s make this thing work!

â—Š Rules & Eligibility:

1) All of the entered names will be collected from the survey site and pasted into a computer generated random name picker. All of this will be videotaped so that nobody can cry foul. 2) The drawing will be held on 11/7/12** and the winners will be notified within 7 days from that date.

3) No previous or current Honest Tune editor/staff may enter

4) Contributors (senior and otherwise) may enter.

5) A person may enter as many times as he/she wishes, but please note all raffle “virtual ticket” sales are final.**

*We are choosing to do this in this manner, as opposed to the traditional routes we have taken with past charity-related auctions, donations, contests and giveaways, is due to the trusted relationships that we have in Live Oak who can steer the giving appropriately, and because we want to see how and who your and our efforts help… especially with a prize as near and dear to our heart as this one is.

**Exceptions: 1) If, by November 2, 2012, there has not been at least $500.00 raised, all monies will either A) be refunded and the raffle will not go down or B) be extended past the original deadline. 2) If a mistake is made in purchasing, refund requests will be looked at and evaluated on a case by case basis. For example: If you accidentally choose to purchase 100 tickets, but you meant to purchase 10, that would be an obvious “of course, we will refund your money.” On the other hand, if you choose to purchase three tickets and have some odd form of buyer’s remorse, your probably going to be out of luck. The refund policy is necessary to ensure that the contest, short as it is, runs smoothly.

Trey Anastasio Thursday — Click here to enter to win CDs, shirts & autographs from Trey, Jen Hartswick & Van Ghost

Over the coming weeks, the giveaways will be grand and therefore, we figured that we should get things underway in a large fashion in hopes that you will embrace us, share what we are doing and if nothing else, enter to win some free shit… some of which will make you yearn with hope for a win, while one is just downright ridiculous, to the point that we should probably see a shrink before announcing the item(s) included.

It all began on Wednesday, with Warren Wednesday, through ________ Monday, 10/22/12 there will be a contest announced.

Each contest will recognize some of our most favorite guitarists. In most cases, names will coincide with days of the week. In one, it won’t, but the fact that we were celebrating guitarists overtook the desire to be cute… and any Honest Tune celebration of guitarists will always include the person whose name simply doesn’t fit with a day.

One word to the wise before beginning: READ EVERYTHING AND FOLLOW ALL CONTEST RULES in today’s contest, whether it be Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Monday.

Each contest will have its own set of requirements for entry, with some being only slightly different and one being entirely different. So please, for your sake, pay attention to everything you fill out and/or complete all steps in regards to what you are asked to do in order for your entry to be valid*.

Further, being Jennifer Hartswick’s friend, in real life or on Facebook, is a beautiful thing. However, in this case it won’t amount to much. Please be sure that you are a “fan” of the page linked above. The same goes for Twitter, where there are several Trey pages as well.

—–

4) This is probably the most important part of the entry process and definitely the most often incorrectly done art. In the past there have been times that we have been somewhat lax. However, in fairness to everyone, this will definitely not be one of those times because as you will see over the next five days, the stakes are too high for this series of contests for us to stray from the rules and regs.

Please carefully review the next two sections and complete one or both of them.

Section 1

A contest for every day of the week ft. some favorite guitarists! Enter here…

For every music fan, there is a favorite time of year. There are those that relish in festival hopping or the shed tours of summers. Others appreciate spring for its innate ability to bring its new life into our lives and thereby draw us from within the warm confines of our homes that, for the preceding months, had been almost solely about the NFL, network programming and financial belt tightening, courtesy of overdoing yet one more way overdone holiday season. But with that said, Winter isn”t all about icicles and houses that smell like forest fires; there are destination music events, like Jam Cruise, Mayan Holidaze, or newcomers like  (Yonder Mountain String Band, Railroad Earth) or Mountain Song at Sea(Del McCoury, Grisman, Punch Brothers). Destination gigs not your bag or a bit out of your wallet”s current comfort zone? Hit up Bear Creek, the event that relies on funk for warmth and hails from a host site, the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park, that”s as good as any calendar at determining what time of year it is.

The fact of the matter is that there is something absolutely unique and awesome about each quarter of the year; and the one that we are currently experiencing is perhaps the best example of seasonal individualism of them all.

Perhaps John Keats described autumn best when he wrote, in part, that it is the…

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

This alignment of our Mother Earth with Helios yields a bountiful harvest that has every bit as much to do with beloved new music for fans and listeners as it does apples, butternut squash or sweet potatoes.  It is a season when well rehearsed bands hit the road, oftentimes on the heels of a fresh studio or precisely culled and mastered live release. It is when bands or solo artists have to compete, bringing nothing short of their “A” game. Sound issues cannot be blamed on lack of a thorough soundcheck or an unassuming chap working front of house at ____________ Music Festival and was “inept and therefore, missed his cues.” Nope, the onus falls squarely on the shoulders of the players and those within their production outfit. It is all intensely exciting.

This year, the harvest is abundant. Some of the greats from within our most tracked niche are out on tours, some of which are present quite a unique opportunity. Still others are either about to release a new album or have just recently done so. Because of this, we at Honest Tune have amassed quite a collection of awesomeness and since our primary job here is to share what we have — whether in the form of news, articles, reviews, videos, photos or in this case, goods — with you, the folks that give this little labor of love a purpose.

It all began yesterday, with Warren Wednesday, through ________ Monday, 10/22/12 there will be a contest announced.

Each contest will recognize some of our most favorite guitarists. In most cases, names will coincide with days of the week. In one, it won”t, but the fact that we were celebrating guitarists overtook the desire to be cute… and any Honest Tune celebration of guitarists will always include the person whose name simply doesn”t fit with a day.

One word to the wise before beginning: READ EVERYTHING AND FOLLOW ALL CONTEST RULES in today”s contest, whether it be Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Monday.

Each  contest will have its own set of requirements for entry, with some being only slightly different and one being entirely different. So please, for your sake, pay attention to everything you fill out and/or complete all steps in regards to what you are asked to do in order for your entry to be valid*.

Free Festival Friday! Enter here to win 2 tickets to Manifestivus (& the road tunes are on us)

Next weekend, an event that started as little more than a bonfire with some kegs will celebrate its tenth installment.

Manifestivus was born from the mind of Toubab‘s David Pransky, years before he teamed up with his current Krewe. Held annually on his family’s vast piece of land in rural Vermont, the event prides itself as being an event that sheds light onto music from all corners of the world – leading National Geographic to coin it as an event that “manages to punch above its weight.”

But Pransky doesn’t want for people to just look at the lineup when considering Manifestivus. Rather, he prefers that people hear about the vibe that, year in and year out, is the story that is told by those who attended the festivities… err festivuties… whatever.

With workshops on instrument building, daily yoga, late night DJs in the woods, artisans galore or a petting zoo and face painting for the children, the event is a celebration of community, sustenance and art.

It is for all of the above reasons and more that we are proud to present this edition of “FREE FESTIVAL FRIDAY,” offering you (yeah, you) the chance to enter to win two free tickets to the event*.

On top of that, we are offering those who want to take things a bit further a chance to be entered to win twice!

What you are playing for…

1) One GRAND PRIZE winner will walk away with two tickets to Manifestivus. Manifestivus takes place over the weekend of 8/17/12 on David Pransky’s (Toubab Krewe) family farm.

3) One “runner-up” winner will walk away with a downloadable mp3 copy of Toubab Krewe’s TK3 from Amazon.®

Frequently Asked Questions:

1)  Q:  If I win and realize that I cannot attend, can I give my tickets to a friend?

A:  Yes, but you must notify us by Wednesday, 8/15/12 at noon CST. Otherwise you will be out of luck since no actual ticket will be issued and name changes will not be allowed at the event’s Will Call.

2) Q: What if I already have tickets to Manifestivus and am entering to save some cash?

A: Well, since we are not organizing the event, there is no way that we can answer that question with any degree of certainty. If what you are asking is “Can I get a refund?” then the answer is “no.” If you are asking “Can I sell my current tickets and use won tickets for my personal admission?” then that will depend on whether or not you have actual tickets and any contractual agreement that you entered into when purchasing the tickets from the event.

3) Q: What is the weather like at this time of year in Vermont?

A: Seriously? Let me Google that for ya.

GOOD LUCK!

Enter here for a massive giveaway/contest that supports Coloradans affected by the fires…

As most know, we at Honest Tune absolutely love hosting contests. They are our way of saying “thanks” for your support. Without you guys and gals reading the articles, watching the videos, checking out the photos, sharing the links, etc., the efforts that are put in from our end would be pretty pointless.  Something that you may have missed though is our love for charity. Over the years, we have been proud to lend a tiny hand to some large and very worthy causes, especially in the wake of disasters.

For example, after April 2011’s tornadoes, we procured some items from the Hangout and hosted an online auction. Then there was a similar set of circumstances in Joplin and the flooding in Vermont where we did another auction after Wakarusa and followed My Morning Jacket’s lead with a “click and enter to give” after their benefit show in Tuscaloosa, AL.

We aren’t mentioning the above events to pat ourselves on the back. Rather, we do so to express our value for the relationship between music and community. It is due to this value that we recognize and support the inherent  correlation between music and charity. Because after all, what better way is there to be good brothers and sisters to our neighbors than to help them in their time of greatest need?

Inspired by events such as Warren Hayne’s annual Christmas Jam, John Bell’s annual Hannah’s Buddy’s Classic and most relevant to the cause we will be supporting with this effort, 2010’s Fourmile Canyon Revival — where String Cheese, Phish, Leftover Salmon & Big Head Todd got together to help raise funds for those affected by the Fourmile Canyon fires.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Today, in conjunction with Free Stuff Friday, we will once again be flexing our “giving” muscles in support of those that have been affected by the ongoing Colorado forest fires.

What is currently going on in Colorado is unprecedented for the Centennial State. Since the first fire began, approximately 17,600 acres have been scorched and a total of 347 homes have been completely destroyed. The people that have been affected have lost everything, including many things that no amount of money will ever replace: family heirlooms, photographs, digital files, pets, and for two families (so far), the loss of a human loved one’s life.

The unfortunate part is that right now, in spite of the valiant and tireless efforts from the emergency responders, the fires show no signs of slowing. Hopefully that will soon change after today’s visit from President Obama and the utilization of all eight of the United States Air Force’s cargo planes equipped to fight wildfires that began this morning. However, even if the efforts by all involved suddenly worked and all fires were extinguished, it would not bring back all that has been lost or lessen the burden (financial and otherwise) of the families that have already been affected.

This brings us to OUR part — meaning us at Honest Tune and YOU, the rest of the Honest Tune family.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————–

Free Stuff Friday!

IMPORTANT: SEE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS BEFORE PLACING ENTRY.

Seriously, you really need to read everything from here on to be sure that you get it right. It’s not that it is that hard. It’s just that there are several entry options and the like.

Being that today is a very special installment of FSF, we are offering a host of stuff. Yep, that is right, we cleaned out our closet and have come up with some great stuff that you will have the ability to enter to win. To boot, all you have to do is enter and share this page. We will do the donating… for every entry legit received Honest Tune will donate a buck*. Sound like a pretty swell idea? Yeah, we thought so too.

“Why are you guys doing this?” you may ask. Well, there are a lot of reasons, but in order to keep it short and sweet, here is the main one: We hope that you will follow our lead and donate to the cause through the links that will be provided by each item.  We want to see just how much we can get you ladies and gentlemen to join in.

For the record, and as will be explained in the rules and fine print, donating WILL NOT increase your chances of winning. However, for everyone that donates, there will be a special drawing for a “mystery prize.” What exactly is this mystery prize? Well, it wouldn’t be a mystery of we told ya. It could be a pair of socks. It could be a ________________ (use your imagination).

    • Offered exclusively at Leftover Salmon’s 4/20/2012 gig in Atlanta, the poster is a mock of Cheech & Chong’s classic flick, Up In Smoke. It features Vince Herman’s and Drew Emmitt’s heads where those of Cheech and Chong’s were in the original design.  It is perfect for framing and would make for a hilarious conversation piece, especially when you and your pals are sitting around on a Saturday, smoking …. Wait, I forgot what were we talking about? Let’s go get some tacos. Yummy!

2) One winner will walk away with a copy of Van Ghost‘s latest EP, The Effect, and two tee-shirts (sized XL and medium)

  • Van Ghost is the brainchild of Michael Harrison Berg and is a band that is primed to take on everything from Sirius’s Jam ON to Top 40 and festivals that cater to virtually any flavor, sans hip-hop or dub-step. The Effect EP is the prelude to the full version, Domino Effect, that will be released soon. Featuring a stellar band that includes the one and only Jennifer Hartswick (of Trey Anastasio fame), Van Ghost is methodically and successfully tackling the tall task of becoming a force to be reckoned with in a music industry that is nearly impossible to figure out. They are doing so by taking the old school route… making good music.

3) One winner will walk away with Trevor Hall tour shirt and an autographed copy (CD) of Trevor Hall‘s latest studio album, Everything Everything Everytime (E3)

nm

  •  Everything Everytime Everywhere, his fifth studio release that  — just as the case has been since he released his first album in the 11th grade —  finds him leading with his strongest suit: his scholarly aptitude as a songwriter. Elementally diverse, the listening journey on E3 is broad; at times heavy and spiritual while at others, playful and toe tapping. Through a mish-mashing of genres (while remaining fundamentally rooted in reggae styling), the sonic diversity makes for a record that can be played time and again without becoming stale

4) One winner will walk away with a Get in the Van poster signed by Henry Rollins.

    • Wait. Stop the press! Hank Rollins in an Honest Tune? Don’t place us in a box homey. If you were keeping up, you would have realized that we are covering a lot of stuff that would cause you to be surprised. Shame Shame. Just kidding. For real though, Get in the Van is a remarkable book. Get in the Van is a memoir by singer, writer, and spoken word artist Henry Rollins first published in 1994 by Rollins’ own company, 2.13.61 Publications. The book is composed of journal entries that Rollins kept while he was lead singer of the band Black Flag from 1981 to its breakup in 1986. Other text includes recollections of times when he had yet to start, or had lapsed in, his journal-keeping. Sections of the book were read and recorded by Rollins and released as a 2-CD set, which won a Grammy in 1995 for Best Spoken Word Album. (Source: Wikipedia)

6) One winner will walk away with a PGroove New Year’s Eve poster signed by the band + former keyboardist, John Hruby.

  • This is a must have for any Perpetual Groove fan. The fact that it is signed by the current four members of the band plus former keyboardist, John Hruby makes it something that will likely never be seen again. As most in the PG fanbase know, New Year’s Eve marked the night when John Hruby turned the ivory reins back over to founding member, Matt McDonald, after his three year tenure in the band.  The night that the guards were exchanged left quite the impression on Honest Tune Associate Editor & Live Music Editor, David Shehi, who wrote “As the 2011 chapter reached its final pages, Perpetual Groove had set the stage for a climactic ending, a cliffhanger that has Perps on the edge of their seat as they anxiously anticipate the next chapter. PGroove 2.0 looks and feels  like it is going to be a hell of a ride.”

7) One winner will walk away with a Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars, The Wandering, Black Crowes)autographed 8×10, taken at Wanee in 2011.

  • Luther Dickinson has been one busy dude here lately. Between his normal crazy touring schedule with North Mississippi Allstars, he has, amongst other things, released Hambone’s Meditations, a solo instrumental album that had Honest Tune Editor In Chief, Tom Speed, raving. Tom wrote “Dickinson the guitarist, the composer and the student are all on display on this accomplished recording. Within the nooks and crannies of the compositions here, there is great heart in this loving tribute to the many fellow maestros who have come before him.” Then there is also his latest band project, The Wandering, that features a collection of talented musicians including Shannon McNally, Amy Lavere, Valerie June, and Sharde Thomas. They too have also released an album, Go On Now, You Can’t Stay Here, the had Honest Tune Managing Editor, Josh Mintz, proclaiming that the group is “is [vocal] a powerhouse.” After debuting at DelFest, The Wandering are prepping for a tour. (To hear Luther talk about all of this, click here) To Luther, we say “slow down!” Wait, no we don’t. We can’t get enough.

8 ) One winner will walk away with an autographed copy of Martin sexton‘s latest album, Fall Like Rain.

  • Listening to Martin Sexton is a trip down a sonic lane like no other. With his most recent EP, Fall Like Rain, Marty hasn’t veered too far off the course that has brought him success in the past. It is deeply personal at times and playful at others. His unique vocal range and tone defies any vocal coach’s lesson plan and his songwriting touches on the entire literary spectrum. However, it is the honesty and integrity of his lyrical craft that makes identification easy and lending an empathic ear, a listener’s natural response. The best part is that he does every bit of it in the live setting…every night.

8 ) One winner will walk away with a tour and Light promotional poster, signed by Matisyahu.

  • Since first emerging on the international stage in 2005, Matisyahu has established a reputation for transcending boundaries- from the stripped-down roots reggae of the gold-certified Live at Stubb’s to the trippy ministrations of the Grammy nominated Youth to the polished pop eclecticism of Light. Then in 2010, Live at Stubbs Vol. II sold over 2 million copies, worldwide. Now based with his family in Los Angeles, Matisyahu has released Spark Seeker, a bold new studio album that finds the vocalist and songwriter exploring uncharted territory.

Frequently Asked Questions

1) Q: Can I enter for more than 1 of the prizes?

A: Yes, but you must complete the requirements for each entry. Obviously you will not be able to “double like” the post, but you will be able to complete the rest of the requirements.

2) Q: Are my odds of winning better if I donate?

A: Pretty sure we covered this. NO.  Everybody’s odds are the same. The only “benefit” for those that do donate — other than the great feeling of giving — is that they will be entered into the “MYSTERY PRIZE” drawing.

3) Q: I do not have Facebook or Twitter. Does that mean that I can’t enter?

A: It sure does. Listen, if you cannot figure out how to work around this issue then it is probably best that you just head back with your pals, the Fraggles, and dance your cares away.

4) Q: You didn’t answer the question I have. How can I get in touch with you?

A: Figure it out. HINT: Look up, then right! 8)

GOOD LUCK!

Free Stuff Friday: Railroad Earth Tickets, Zigaboo’s drumstick, PGroove’s Amberland poster & Grace Potter’s new album…

For some reason, we have been slipping lately in the contest department. Well, consider today the day that we make up for our recent lapse.

Yep, today we have three things that are quite awesome to give to you, our loyal Honest Tune reading friends and family.Because it seems like a catchy phrase, we are officially deeming today “Free Stuff Friday,” but before you go patting us on the back for this unbelievable demonstration of creativity… let us never forget the days of 2011’s Free Festival Fridays, something that will soon repeat itself.

Free Stuff Friday!

IMPORTANT: SEE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS BEFORE PLACING ENTRY

What you are playing for…

1) One winner will walk away with two tickets to Railroad Earth’s show at The Fillmore in Charlotte on June 21, 2012*.

  • It is no wonder that success has been no stranger to the band. With two festivals that they can now call their own (Music on the Mountaintop & Hangtown Halloween), this year, Honest Tune has already seen Railroad Earth on Jam Cruise and at the Superbowl, Hangout Fest and Wakarusa, not to mention several shows. Railroad Earth is one of America’s greatest bands playing today, plain and simple. They sing of our nation’s changing landscape and social ills with a commitment reminiscent of Woody Guthrie, while interpolating instrumental timbres that could have been pulled from Celtic or Cajun culture. And as anyone who has caught them live will attest, their concerts are imbued with the fire-in-the-belly passion of straight-ahead, blue collar rock & roll.

2) One winner will walk away with an official event poster (designed by bassist, Adam Perry) from the 2012 installment of Perpetual Groove that is signed by the band.

    • Perpetual Groove is riding higher in 2012 than they have in quite some time. With the return of founding keyboardist, a rekindling has taken place that is audible in the music and even visible on the guys’ faces. But the truest test for any diehard Perp (fan of PGroove) is the band’s annual event, Amberland, the intimate four night camping event that takes over Lafayette, GA’s Cherokee Farms every year.  To say that the band passes would be like saying that Chong sort of liked bud. They were all aces, even managing to work in a couple of numbers that were fresh out of the box for many listeners’ ears.

2) One winner will walk away with a drumstick that was used in concert and signed by the legendary drummer from The Meters, Zigaboo Modeliste.

  • Joseph “Zigaboo” Modeliste is one of, if not the most influential funk drummer of all time. Otherwise referred to as the Godfather of the Groove, his timeless style of play, known as “second line funk,” has been sampled by acts ranging from Digable Planets to the Beastie Boys. Having recorded with legends across all genres, Zig remains as relevant today as he was when The Meters first sprung onto the scene in the late sixties and early seventies when after one listen, Mick Jagger was so impressed with the outfit that he invited them to play on the Rolling Stones 1976-1977 World Tour.

The drumstick up for grabs is a signature series Vic Firth 5A that was used in a live performance and autographed at a late night Jazz Fest gig.

3) One winner will walk away with a copy (CD) of Grace Potter & the Nocturnals’ forthcoming release, The Lion The Beast The Beat (due 6/12/12) and a signed 8×10 photograph, shot by Honest Tune’s very own David Shehi.

  • It is official… Grace Potter is a star, but that doesn’t mean that she and her Nocturnals are basking in the sun, chilling and waiting for the next royalty check to come in. For a woman like Grace, she couldn’t do that if she tried anyway. This is abundantly clear with her forthcoming LP, The Lion The Beast The Beat. Lyrically, she is as bold as ever and deeply personal. Opting to not tour on any of the material prior to deciding what would be on the finished product,  Grace says that “[the record] is not about selling albums, making people like them that didn’t like them before or bending expectations.” Rather, she says that it was more about “personal fulfillment” and “turning the page for themselves.”  The best part is that it worked… just as we all knew it would. Currently on tour with Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw with intermittent GPN headlining dates in between and Grand Point North fest in September, the sky is the limit for “our little Gracie Potter,” but knowing her, she at the band will reach it and keep on keeping on with a desire for an even higher altitude. As she puts it, that is “what great artists do.” Well, she is certainly one of those.
