Brooklyn’s Rock Lottery is returning for the third year to the Knitting Factory on Saturday, December 1st, with confirmed musicians participating from bands including My Morning Jacket, Blonde Redhead, Yuck, Javelin, Against Me!, Nicholas Jaar, Hospitality and (full lineup to be revealed in the upcoming weeks).

Following the tremendous devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, Brooklyn’s Rock Lottery will be donating 100% of the proceeds from this year’s event to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. Entry is $15 and every cent goes back to helping those in need. You can buy tickets now by clicking here.

The Rock Lottery began in Denton, TX in 1997 (and in Seattle in 2006). This will be Brooklyn’s third annual Rock Lottery. The premise is simple, but effective. The musicians, hand picked from Brooklyn’s thriving indie music community, meet at 10AM, where they are organized into five groups through a lottery-based selection. These groups are then released to collaborate and practice at different locations, with 12 hours to choose a band name and write three to five songs (with a one cover-song limit). The groups will then perform the material as a band in front of a live audience on the very same night.

The twenty-five musicians included in the experiment are selected in an attempt to represent a wide variety of musical styles. This event intends to bring together many facets of the Brooklyn music community that may seem incompatible, as well as musicians whose interests may conflict. The challenge for these musicians is to try and go beyond their personal and musical differences and work together to create a unified group project that still contains the personal styles of each of the participants. All proceeds from Rock Lottery go to a local charity.

In the past, Rock Lottery has featured over three hundred musicians from some of Denton/Dallas, Seattle & Brooklyn’s most acclaimed national and international acts (Aqueduct, Bedhead, The Baptist Generals, Bear In Heaven, Brave Combo, Built to Spill, Centro-matic, Dan Deacon, Fleet Foxes, Harvey Danger, Les Savy Fav, Lift to Experience, Liturgy, The Long Winters, Maktub, Mother love Bone, Murder City Devils, Oberhofer, Pedro the Lion, The Polyphonic Spree, The Riverboat Gamblers, Slobberbone, Smoosh, Suckers, Tiny Vipers, The Toadies and White Rabbits among many others).
