Jamie McLean Band
The Double Door Inn
Charlotte, North Carolina
December 31, 2008
On New Year’s Eve, The Jamie McLean Band graced Charlotte’s Double Door Inn with a night of fun to ring in 2009. Sponsored by Carolina Live Music Society (CLMS) and local publication Creative Loafing, tickets prior to day of show could be had for free.
Guitarist and singer Jamie McLean is probably most widely known for being the former guitarist for Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Now based out of NYC after Katrina, the Jamie McLean Band has been touring heavily in support of their critically acclaimed third and latest release, American Heartache.
The new record is a solid collection of songs that covers a lot of topics: heartache, heartbreak, relationships, New Orleans and Katrina, life as a musician on the road, being naughty, and being nice. The band put a decent chunk of it on display at the Double Door.
The band consists of Jon Solo on keyboards, who’s been with the band since the beginning and is Jamie’s “Right hand man”. Recently he has been playing some guitar and sings his ass off.
Original bass player Derek Layes is back following a brief hiatus earlier in the tour; he also has been with the band since the beginning too but was touring with other projects for a bit last year. He was really thumping all night long with heavy bass lines and solos. Lastly, Brian Griffin kicks ass on drums.
At first the crowd was lighter than expected and the band looked a bit disappointed. But after a few songs ripped through the air, the band had everyone dancing.
By the time the countdown to 2009 took place and the champagne was poured and tipped, the house was packed and everyone, old and young, was into it. Even the infamous stuff guerilla “Rilla” joined in the fun.
The band played several songs from albums This Time Around and American Heartache. They also debuted several songs from a forthcoming record; the band is going into the studio immediately after this tour so NYE was a preview of what’s to come.
Jamie McLean and company ripped thorough crowd favorite "Can You Hear Me Now," tore up a couple of Tom Petty covers including “You Wreck Me,” and played a sizzling version of the Rolling Stone classic “Loving Cup."
The band played a great show, and will be back after recording their new album. Charlotte seems to be a home away from home for the band, and they treated their family well on New Year’s Eve.
